Understanding Paper Weight: GSM, Pounds, and What They Mean for Drawing
Paper weight is one of those specs that looks straightforward until you try to compare two products and the numbers don't line up the way you'd expect. A 24lb sheet from one supplier and an 80lb sheet from another can be closer in actual thickness than the numbers suggest — because "lb" and "gsm" aren't measuring quite the same thing.
GSM: a true area measurement
Grams per square metre (gsm) is exactly what it sounds like: weigh one square metre of the paper, and that's the number. It's a direct, size-independent measurement, which is why gsm is the more reliable number to shop by whenever you can get it. A 200gsm sheet is always the same physical weight, full stop, regardless of who made it or what category it's sold under.
Why pounds are more complicated
The US "lb" system measures something different: the weight of 500 sheets of a category's historical parent sheet size, before it's cut down to the size you actually buy. Bond and writing paper is based on a 17×22in parent sheet. Text and book paper uses 25×38in. Cover stock uses 20×26in. Index stock uses 25.5×30.5in.
Because those parent sheets are different sizes, the same "lb" number represents a different amount of actual paper depending on which category it belongs to. Working through a few real conversions
A handful of worked examples make the pattern concrete. On the Bond basis, 20lb converts to 75gsm, 24lb to 90gsm, 28lb to 105gsm, and 32lb to 120gsm — a fairly gentle, linear climb, which tracks because Bond's basis factor (3.76) is applied consistently across that whole range. On the Text basis, the factor is smaller (1.48), so a 60lb Text sheet is only 89gsm and even a hefty 100lb Text sheet lands at 148gsm — noticeably lighter, gsm for gsm, than the equivalent-sounding Bond number. Index stock sits in between: a 90lb Index sheet is 164gsm, and a 140lb Index sheet — which sounds enormous next to a 24lb Bond sheet — is 255gsm, genuinely heavy but not as extreme as the raw number implies. None of these are approximations; they come directly from the real, industry-standard basis-weight factors (Bond 3.76, Text 1.48, Cover 2.708, Index 1.822), the same ones the calculator applies.
Rough weight ranges by drawing medium
With gsm as the common currency, here's roughly where different techniques land, straight from the calculator's built-in recommendations:
- Dry graphite (90–160gsm): a light-to-mid cartridge paper. Heavy enough to erase and layer graphite repeatedly without pilling, light enough to fill a sketchbook without it becoming a brick. In Bond terms, that band runs from roughly 24lb up to 43lb.
- Charcoal (120–200gsm): a similar range, usually with more visible tooth to grip loose charcoal particles and support blending and lifting — about 32lb to 53lb Bond.
- Ink and fineliner with light wash (160–224gsm): heavier, often smoother or hot-press stock, chosen to resist the feathering and cockling that a lighter sheet suffers under even a small amount of water — roughly 43lb to 60lb Bond.
- Watercolor pencil, wet-blended (300–640gsm): genuinely heavy, cold-press paper — commonly sold as 140lb or 300lb watercolor stock — built to survive a wet brush without buckling. Watercolor paper is conventionally rated on its own scale rather than the Bond/Text/Cover/Index bases above, which is exactly why the manufacturer-quoted "140lb" figure doesn't slot neatly into the same conversion — treat the gsm number as the reliable one here and the lb figure as a familiar label rather than a value to convert.
None of these bands are hard rules; a confident hand can push dry graphite techniques onto lighter paper than the range above, and a very controlled wash can survive on paper lighter than 300gsm. A quick sanity check

Why some markets quote gsm and others quote lb
The lb/gsm split isn't arbitrary history so much as two different industries settling on different habits. Gsm is the ISO-standard measurement used through most of the world outside the US and Canada, and it's what you'll see on the majority of European and Asian art paper. The lb system persisted in North America because it was already entrenched in the printing and office-paper trade long before gsm became common, and art and drawing paper largely inherited whichever convention the mill's other product lines already used — which is exactly why a Bond-basis lb number and a Cover-basis lb number, printed on two different pads sitting on the same shelf, aren't comparable to each other without knowing which basis each one uses. What a sketchbook's spec sheet is actually telling you
Most commercial sketchbooks print a single gsm number on the cover and leave it at that, which is usually enough information on its own once you know the rough bands above. A "100gsm" sketchbook sits right at the light end of the dry-graphite range — fine for quick sketching, but likely to show ghosting or slight pilling under heavy erasing. A "160gsm" or "170gsm" pad sits at the boundary between graphite and ink territory, which is why so many general-purpose "mixed media" sketchbooks land in exactly that range — it's a genuine compromise weight, not a marketing number, chosen because it's the lightest sheet that still tolerates a fineliner reasonably well while remaining light enough to bind a few hundred pages into a portable book. Don't estimate the conversion in your head
Because the four basis factors (3.76, 1.48, 2.708, 1.822) are close enough to each other that a rough mental shortcut feels plausible, it's tempting to eyeball a conversion rather than look it up — and that's exactly where the confusion this article opened with comes from. When weight isn't the whole story
Weight tells you how thick and sturdy a sheet is, but not its surface texture, its sizing (how it resists water absorption), or its acid content and archival quality.
