How to Choose the Right Graphite Pencil Grade
Open a box of drawing pencils for the first time and the grading looks like a code: 2H, HB, 4B, and a run of letters that don't obviously map to anything. Once you know what H and B actually stand for, though, the whole system collapses into one simple idea, and picking a grade stops being a guess.
What H and B actually mean
H stands for hard, and B stands for black. Every graphite pencil sits somewhere on a single line running from the hardest, lightest-marking grades (9H) through the middle grades (H, F, HB) to the softest, darkest-marking grades (9B). There is no separate "quality" axis here — hardness and darkness are two names for the same underlying property.
The reason is the core itself. A pencil "lead" isn't pure graphite; it's a mixture of graphite and clay. More clay makes the core harder, so it holds a point longer and leaves a lighter, more precise line. More graphite makes it softer, so it wears down faster but deposits far more material with each stroke, which is what produces a rich, dark mark. A 9H core is mostly clay. A 9B core is almost entirely graphite.
Reading the scale at a glance
Manufacturers vary slightly, but the standard sequence runs: 9H, 8H, 7H, 6H, 5H, 4H, 3H, 2H, H, F, HB, B, 2B, 3B, 4B, 5B, 6B, 7B, 8B, 9B — twenty grades in total. HB sits at the exact middle, and F ("fine point") sits just barely on the harder side of it — a small but real distinction some brands skip entirely, folding F's grades into H or HB.
A useful mental shortcut: the further a grade sits from HB in either direction, the more extreme its behaviour. A 2H is only slightly harder and lighter than HB; a 7H is dramatically harder and lighter, better suited to faint construction lines than to anything you want clearly visible. The same logic runs the other way toward 9B.
The full scale, grade by grade
It helps to see the whole run laid out with an actual darkness value attached, rather than just a list of letters. - 9H–5H (darkness 0.5–2.5): hard leads — precise, faint, and built for construction lines you intend to erase or draw over, not for a mark you want anyone to notice.
- 4H–F (darkness 3–4.75): fine sketching and underdrawing — crisp, controlled linework with a bit more visible weight than the hard grades, without heavy graphite buildup.
- HB–2B (darkness 5–6): general purpose — the everyday range for sketching, outlining, and light-to-medium shading. Most people's default pencil lives here.
- 3B–9B (darkness 6.5–9.5): shading and dramatic contrast — soft, dark, and quick to smudge, built for shadow, blending, and dramatic accents rather than precise lines.
Two details are worth noticing in that table. First, F sits at darkness 4.75, not a round number — it's a genuine half-step between H (4.5) and HB (5), which is exactly why some manufacturers drop it: it's a real but subtle distinction, easy to fold into its neighbours. Second, the scale is symmetrical around HB: 2H and 2B sit the same distance from the middle in opposite directions, which is a handy way to guess how a grade you haven't tried yet will behave once you know its mirror image.
Matching a grade to a task
A drawing rarely needs the whole range at once. A single sketch might use an H for the initial layout, an HB or 2B for most of the linework and mid-tones, and a 6B reserved for the darkest shadow accents. Building a small working set
Rather than buying every grade in the catalogue, a practical starter set covers five or six points spaced across the scale: something like 2H, HB, 2B, 4B, 6B, and a softer 8B for deep accents. That spread gives you a genuinely different mark at each step without redundancy, and it's cheap enough to build gradually as you notice which grades you actually reach for. Owning all twenty grades sounds thorough but mostly just means carrying nineteen pencils you'll never sharpen, because the practical difference between neighbouring grades — a 4B and a 5B, say — is small enough that pressure and paper do more of the work than the half-step between them.
It's also worth testing a new brand before committing to a full set. Grading isn't standardised industry-wide, so one manufacturer's 2B can read closer to another's B or 3B. Darkness isn't the only variable
Two other factors matter alongside grade. Pressure does a lot of the work day to day; a light touch with a 4B can produce a lighter mark than a heavy hand with an HB, so grade sets the ceiling and the floor, but your hand decides where you land inside it. Woodcase versus mechanical, and why grade still applies
Everything above holds whether the graphite is in a woodcase pencil you sharpen with a blade, a mechanical pencil that advances a fixed-diameter lead, or a clutch (leadholder) pencil that takes a thicker, sharpenable stick. What changes between formats is line-width control and how quickly the point wears, not the H/B behaviour itself — a 2B lead in a 0.5mm mechanical pencil is still a 2B, and still sits at darkness 6 on the scale, but it holds a consistent thin line far longer than a woodcase 2B does, because there's no broad, freshly-sharpened cone of graphite to round off. That makes mechanical pencils attractive for hard-to-mid grades where a consistent line matters (construction work, fine detail), and less useful for the softest grades, where a fat, freshly cut woodcase point is often exactly what you want for covering area quickly.
Layering instead of pressing harder
A common beginner instinct, when a mark isn't dark enough, is to press harder with the same pencil. That works only up to a point — beyond a certain pressure you're burnishing the paper's tooth flat rather than depositing more graphite, and the mark stops getting darker no matter how hard you push, while the paper itself starts to resist any pencil that follows. Layering — building a dark passage out of several light-to-medium passes with a softer grade, sometimes alternating grades as the tone builds — keeps the paper's tooth open longer and gives you far more control over exactly how dark an area gets, since you can stop at any pass rather than committing to one heavy stroke. It's slower than pressing hard once, but it's the difference between a shadow that reads as rich and one that reads as scratched-in.
Erasers belong in the same conversation as grade
Choosing a grade and choosing an eraser are really the same decision looked at from two ends. A kneaded eraser lifts gently and works well across the whole scale, but it struggles to fully clear a heavily layered soft-grade passage — it dents and lightens rather than removing completely. A harder vinyl or plastic eraser clears more completely, including hard-grade construction lines that a kneaded eraser barely touches, but it's more likely to abrade a delicate paper surface if used aggressively on a heavily worked area.
