Several tools use deliberately simplified, transparent formulas that are explained in full on each tool’s own page; they are a practical reference, not a photometric or laboratory-grade instrument. Pencil-grading conventions in particular are not standardised between manufacturers, so treat grade-based results as comparative, not absolute.

Why a Result May Look Off

A calculator can return a surprising or blank answer when:

• Units are mismatched: entering a gsm value where a lb value is expected (or the reverse), or mixing inches and centimetres across fields that expect a consistent unit.
• The wrong paper basis is selected:a lb weight means a different physical sheet depending on whether it’s bond, text, cover, or index stock.
• Inputs describe an impossible setup: for example, a reference point placed exactly on a vanishing point, or a non-positive dimension.
• A grade or size isn’t recognised:the graphite scale and the ISO paper sizes cover a fixed, standard set — an unusual manufacturer-specific grade or a non-ISO page size (such as US Letter) won’t match.
