How the steps are calculated

Each step divides the 0–100% range evenly by the number of steps you choose, then converts that percentage directly into a grayscale value (white at 0%, black at 100%) for the swatch. A 9-step scale, for instance, moves in even 12.5% increments; a 10-step scale moves in even 11.1% increments.

The result is a linear ramp rather than a perceptually corrected one, which keeps the maths transparent and the swatches easy to reproduce by hand with graphite, since the pressure needed roughly tracks the percentage darker at each step.
